Born in 1888 in Elberfeld, moved to Hamburg after World War One, Hartmann
immediately joined the "Hamburg Secession". In 1934 he occupied a studio in the Ohlendorffhaus. |

After 1933 he was considered "entartet" ("degenerate"), in 1937 several of his
paintings were confiscated, later destroyed. He lived in absolute poverty; in
World War Two he was drawn in to serve the "Kulturluftschutz" ("Cultural Air-raid Defence") and organized the removal of art treasures from their storage to suitable quarters in the outskirts of Hamburg. In 1946 he was called to teach at the Hamburger Landeskunstschule, in 1955 he was honoured with the Edwin-Scharff-Preis.
In 1974 Erich Hartmann died in Hamburg.
