At first, the bank. The last cheque is cashed and his telephone number left
behind just in case, so as to be immediately informed in the event of – long due - pecuniary receipts. Despite the grave arguments with his mother – which had ultimately led to Beckett's hurried departure from Ireland -, she did not leave her "prodigal son" to "go to the dogs" in faraway Germany, and regularly transferred small sums.

In view of his momentary, exceedingly precarious, financial situation, he
foregoes the purchase of a German grammar by Otto Sauer, which he had been flirting with at Boysen,
but 5.50.
